With more and more large scale and corporate “Gravel” events popping up it is great to see that there are some local bike shops and groups getting together to share their local trails and routes.
The past weekend we headed of to Newmarket to join ADVNTR and Phoenix Cycleworks for their monthly get together.
Being a cold, damp and rather grey Saturday it was amazing to see close to forty five fellow cyclists braving the conditions to ride close to 60km of back country roads, gravel tracks, woodland and huge puddles. Through the surrounding villages and bridleways connecting the route it gave all those new to the monthly ride a glimpse of what to expect as Phoenix Cycleworks develops. Currently their purpose-built bike park is having an overhaul creating a larger selection jumps, berms and northshore woodwork.
With their new coffee shop beavering away it gave everyone a chance to talk about the route and make a few last minute changes. There has been a lot of rain of recent and the standing water has created a lot of issues for farmers, cyclists and the odd animal. Deep puddles, sloppy mud tracks covered in leaves made the route that more enjoyable and did little to dampen the spirits. While there were several punctures and the odd mechanical, no one was left behind. With the group chatting and laughing through forests, farm tracks and bridleways.
The ride being a non-drop affair there were all manor of bikes, ages and abilities which allowed those new to the gravel scene a chance to see what it was all about. Some folks had borrowed bikes, while others turned up on their high end MTBs, almost every style of bike was there.
If you are close to Newmarket and feel like joining don’t worry as the Phoenix Cycleworks will be hosting their gravel rides once a month. For more information head to their website; Phoenix Cycleworks
